Aussie Invasion: Record Number of Aussie's to Compete in Ohio Speedweek |
|
by Andre Weich The annual Aussie invasion of the All Stars Circuit of Champions, Ohio Speedweek will be led by Troy Little and newly crowned Parramatta City Raceway track champion, Ian Loudon. Completing the quartet is Bruce White and Roddy Bell-Bowen. All are from Sydney, New South Wales.
Sadly the fifth member of the Aussie squad, Matthew Reed has had to pull out due to problems with travel arrangements. A real pity, as Reed just recently picked up a win at Sharon Speedway and looked to have adjusted very well.
Little with Knoxville Nationals winning crew chief, Bill Roberts are no strangers to Ohio, having competed there for the past three years. Last year the team were beset by a series of problems and the local fans have not seen what this team is capable of. At home, Little is not far off the likes of Brooke Tatnell and Kerry Madsen and hopefully the Ohio fans will see the team firing on all cylinders this year. We rank Little as the top Aussie prospect at this year's Speedweek.
Rated closely behind Little is the newly crowned Parramatta City Raceway track champion, Ian Loudon. Parramatta has the largest weekly 410 car count in the world (around 60 cars) and winning the track championship is a significant feat.
Loudon will drive the second Bruce White car. Accompanying Loudon will his Bevelite team-mate, Adrian Maher. Maher himself is an outstanding driver, probably second only to Loudon at PCR, but unfortunately Maher won't be driving this year. Not sure about his availability should a seat become available, but it would be well worth checking should someone urgently need a driver. I guarantee a top-class talent!
The third member of the quartet is veteran racer, Bruce White. White himself raced extensively in Ohio last year and should be all the better for the experience. No longer as quick as he once was (he held the one-lap track record at PCR for a number of years), he will be looking for improves showings this year.
The fourth member of the quartet is young Roddy Bell-Bowen, one of the upcoming talents at PCR. This is primarily a learning experience for Roddy and he has had a fairly tough time of it so far in Ohio, driving for car-owner, Barry Ruble. He will be setting his sights on an A-main start every night, but he knows that it will be no easy task. |

The Buckeye State Gears Up for Ohio Speedweek - The Countdown Begins |
CAMARGO, IL (6-4-08) by Bryan Autullo – All Star PR Director The 2008 UNOH Ohio Sprint Speedweek is fast approaching and later this month, winged 410 sprint cars will converge on the Buckeye State to extend a tradition that began in 1983. Ohio Speedweek has always been one of the premier weeks on the All Star schedule and is also one of the most prestigious weeks of sprint car racing in the United States. The event is rich in tradition and history and another chapter will be added starting on June 22nd at Attica Raceway Park. The deadline for pre-registration for points fund and bonus money has been extended through June 15th due to the lateness of the advertising for these events. Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, OH had announced early this season that they have closed for the season, and there was some indecision as to where the Monday night event would be held. Since that time an agreement has been reached with the facility to open the gates one more time this season to host the 2008 Ohio Speedweek event. Each year, nearly 100 drivers compete over the seven nights of dirt track mayhem with one driver emerging as the Ohio Speedweek Champion. The crews call it “hell week” and many rarely find time to sleep until the week is over. It is a grueling week for teams and drivers, but for the fans it is one of the best values in sprint car racing. With a shaky economy and high fuel prices, an effort was made to ease the travel distances between each event by not having to criss-crossing the state multiple times. |

2008 Ohio Speedweek Preview |
|
CAMARGO, IL (5-21-08) by Bryan Autullo – All Star PR Director The 26th Annual UNOH Ohio Sprint Speedweek is just around the corner and the All Stars are geared up to make it exciting once again. Always a week to look forward to every summer, this year proves to be no different as a $10,000 point fund is in place to be distributed at the end of the week to some of the most talented sprint car drivers in the country. In addition, the Ohio Speedweek promoters have once again offered a $50,000 bonus to any driver who can win 4 of the 7 scheduled events. Dale Blaney came close to capturing the bonus money in 2007, coming up just short on the final night. Will there be a $50,000 winner in 2008? Drivers are required to pre-register to be eligible for the Speedweek point fund and the bonus money. The forms are available on the All Star web site and the Ohio Speedweek web site. In addition to the possible bonus money being paid, there is over $197,000 up for grabs in scheduled purse money alone. Ohio Sprint Speedweek is one of the richest weeks of racing in the United States and has attracted many of the top names of the sport from across the country and as far away as Australia year after year, making it a must see event for any sprint car fan. A total of 93 drivers competed in Ohio Speedweek events in 2007 with Shane Stewart taking home the Ohio Speedweek Championship title.
The first official Speedweek points event is on Sunday June 22nd at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio. Then on Monday June 23rd it's on to Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio. From there the series moves to Hilltop Speedway in Millersburg, Ohio on Tuesday June 24th. On Wednesday June 25th the series heads to Skyline Speedway in Stewart, Ohio. Then it's back to familiar Fremont Speedway in Fremont, Ohio on June 26th and then on to Limaland Motorsports Park on Friday June 27th in Lima, Ohio. All of these events pay $5000 to win leading up to Saturday's $10,000 to win Speedweek finale which will be held on June 28th at the monster ½ mile Eldora Speedway. Lynch Wins Finale as Stewart Wins Championship |
ROSSBURG, OH (6-30-07) – The O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions wrapped up the 25th Annual UNOH Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by RacingJunk.com at “The Big E” – Tony Stewart’s Eldora Speedway with a huge crowd and 39 cars and stars ready to cap off the week. One surprise visitor was Ed Lynch Jr., a Western PA standout who has come close to a win at Eldora Speedway many times, but always came up short. This time he finally took the checkered flag for his first win at “The Track That Earl Built” by virtue of a good qualifying run and a fast car that allowed him to drive it hard anywhere on the speedway.
“Earl always told me I was going to get one down here,” said Lynch. “I finally got it and I’m glad Earl is still around to see it. I pulled the wing back too far and Kenny drove away from me, then I got back by him, then he drove away from me again and then broke. I guess his misfortune was just my fortune this time.”
