LIMA, Ohio Joey Saldana honored sprint car hero and legend Brad Doty with a victory in the Brad Doty Classic at Limaland Motorsports Park on Thursday night. 44 cars packed the pits to take part in the event that was postponed from Wednesday’s heavy showers that fell throughout the Ohio area. The large crowd watched as Saldana rocketed around the ¼ mile high banked bullring in Western Ohio as he piloted his Kasey Kahne owned Curb Records sponsored machine to another feature win in the highly anticipated event co-sanctioned by the World of Outlaws and the All Stars Circuit of Champions. “I felt like in traffic I was doing pretty good,” Saldana said. “It seemed like it was my Achilles heal on the other short tracks. I kind of got myself in a bad situation and lost some momentum and those guys ran me down. I definitely felt pretty good though. Traffic always dictates the winner on a quarter-mile. We still had the speed, and I’ll take it.”
Saldana was thrilled to win the Brad Doty Classic, a race which has become one of the “must see” events each summer. “It’s huge,” said Saldana. “He was a hell of a race car driver. I’ve been trying to do this for a while since I was with the All Stars. I have come really close and we got it done tonight.” Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who made his return to the area after picking up three wins during Ohio Speedweek – including one at Limaland – fought his way to the front from his 3rd row starting position as he held off Donny Schatz while picking off Brooke Tattnell, Daryn Pittman, and finally Terry McCarl with just a few laps to go. He crossed the finish line just a few car lengths back from Saldana in 2nd place, however post race inspection found him to be 10 lbs. light at the scales as he weighed in at 1365 lbs. He was scored in 24th place. McCarl, who earlier in the evening won the dash, would inherit 2nd place from Stenhouse followed by Schatz, Danny Lasoski, and Tattnell. “Early on I think I had a better car than Joey in the middle of the track and down low in traffic, but the yellow kept coming out,” said McCarl. “He ran the top better than me and probably better than anyone out here. I was moving around and tried everything with my car and looked around up there. I was a little more aggressive with the car on the top. I had to make a bonsai move on the start, but he was a little better. We were hoping to win the Brad Doty Classic, it’s a big race.” All Star points leader Greg Wilson, who started deep in the field, made an astonishing charge to the front making it all the way up to 6th place through heavy traffic and looked to have one of the fastest cars on the track at the end of the race. However, with just a handful of laps remaining he got into the turn 3 fence and flipped ending what would surely have been a Top 5 run. All Star members Dale Blaney finished the night in the 7th spot as Danny Smith and Phil Gressman finished 12th and 13th. Chad Blonde was 14th, Bobby Clark 17th, Greg Wilson 18th, Byron Reed 19th, Tim Hunter 21st, and Brock Mayes 22nd. Stenhouse rounded out the field in 24th after the weight infraction. Next up, the All Stars head South to Eldora Speedway for the two day Kings Royal event on July 14th and 15th. For more information, please visit www.allstarsprint.com or www.eldoraspeedway.com.
