Donny Schatz’s homecoming was a popular one as he gave the fans their money’s worth as they cheered on the local star who leads the World of Outlaws series points. Schatz has been gaining momentum over the last several races and has not finished outside the Top 7 for weeks.
35 cars were on hand to do battle in Fargo at the Red River Valley Speedway on Night #1 of the Duel in the Dakotas event. Schatz qualified 6th, transferred from his heat and then was able to win the dash, putting him on the pole for the 25 lap preliminary event.
Joey Saldana jumped out to the early lead, but Schatz ran him down and took the lead on lap 20. He managed to hold off a hard charging Tyler Walker, Saldana, and Craig Dollansky to land in victory lane.
“Nothing is better than getting to victory lane at home,” Schatz said. “We want to thank everyone for coming out. Joey and I ran laps side by side in the dash and it’s not very often you have that anymore. It was a good fun night for us, and I hope the people enjoyed it. There’s going to be even more tomorrow.”
Tyler Walker, who spent the last few seasons in the NASCAR ranks, had an impressive run from 6th to 2nd. “It’s good to be back in a position fighting for wins,” Walker said. “I have to thank Guy Forbrook for believing in me. It’s good to be back in a race car that is capable of winning every night. It’s a lot of fun for me and everybody onboard. It’s a pleasure to drive, and I’m having a lot of fun. It’s good to be back in a sprint car.”
All Star points leader Greg Wilson finished the night in 15th place with a solid run that will keep him on top of the All Stars season points. Paul May had a good run against the Outlaws on the big ½ mile speedway as well and finished 18th. Danny Smith, Brock Mayes, and Brandon Martin all had problems in the race that put them at 21st, 23rd, and 24th respectively. Chad Blonde spun in the B-main and was unable to transfer. James Mosher scratched from the B-main with mechanical problems.
The points battle is heating up further down the list as only 13 points now separate 2nd place Chad Blonde and 3rd place Brock Mayes. Chad is only about 100 points behind leader Wilson. Paul May sits in 4th place just 15 points behind Mayes.
