Danny Smith Loses Wife to Cancer
Sunday, 16 April 2006

The All Star Circuit of Champions regrets to announce that long time sprint car driver Danny Smith has lost his wife to brain cancer.  Jan has been battling this illness for some time now and passed away Saturday morning.  The helmets were passed in the stands on Saturday night at Attica Raceway Park's All Star show as well as the World of Outlaws show at Haubstadt, IN netting several thousand dollars to be given to the Smith family.  Over $4000 was raised by the World of Outlaws at Haubstadt and the fans at Attica donated nearly $2300 with Attica Raceway Park making it an even $2500.

Danny has been taking some time away from racing since Florida to spend with his wife and family.  We all express our condolences to the Smith family and we would like to ask that everyone keep Danny in your thoughts and prayers.  He has given a lot to this sport over the years and his many fans have asked how they can send cards and/or donations.  The following was released by the Smith family:

Jan Smith, wife of veteran sprint car driver Danny Smith, died early Saturday morning April 15 after a long battle with cancer. She was 54. A passionate educator, her teaching career spanned 30-plus years, beginning as an English teacher at Brownsburg High School in 1975. In 2000 she moved to Danville School Corporation, where she assumed the post of secondary curriculum director. Since revealing her illness in August of last year, Jan experienced a tremendous outpouring of support from the community, particularly former students and fellow educators. Jan is survived by husband Danny, whom she married Nov. 29, 1991; son Derrek Alexander; sisters Jackie Kelly, Jill Wallace, and Adina Currier; several nieces and nephews, and one great-niece. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Thelma Wallace. Services will be held at Baker’s Funeral Home in Danville, with visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, and burial will follow at Hadley Cemetary. Jan asked prior to her death that memorial contributions be made to Karing for Kaden, a foundation established to aid in the recovery of an elementary student in nearby Plainfield who has battled leukemia for three years. In addition, Kaden’s family lost their home in a fire this past December. Contributions may be sent to Karing for Kaden, 1641 S. CR 525 West, Danville, IN 46122.4/15

There is also a link on this web site on the left side menu to donate to the American Cancer Society if you wish to make an anonymous donation to help in the search for a cure.
