ROSSBURG, OH (7-14-06) – Every summer in the middle of July, the small town of Rossburg, Ohio increases its population by about 18,000 people for the annual King’s Royal event. The crowds converge on Eldora Speedway from all directions to see one of the greatest spectacles in motorsports. The 23rd Annual Kings Royal by Crown Royal did not disappoint those who traveled from near and far to witness the event.
Friday’s event, dubbed “The Knight Before the King’s Royal” was won by Craig Dollansky after early race leader Kevin Swindell flipped in turn one. “It’s pretty tough when you run above the cushion like that,” said Dollansky. “The cushion was pretty deep. I felt like we would have a good shot in lapped traffic because he (Swindell) was good on the open track by himself. This car was running good.”
The big story of the evening was Dale Blaney who started the A-main 24th and used the bottom of the track to work his way to the front picking off 2 and 3 cars per lap. “I didn’t need the red with ten to go,” said Blaney. “The last nine laps I kind of struggled. I could see McCarl and Walker and who knows where we could have ended up. The way the track was, it was hard to pass anyone. Everyone tried to run around the curb. Starting 24th we took a chance and ran the bottom. We started going good out there and stayed out there. We kept rolling.” Blaney would finish the night in the 4th spot behind Dollansky, Terry McCarl, and Tyler Walker. Kenny Jacobs rounded out the Top 5 in the JEI Chassis house car fielded by Barry Jackson.
Saturday’s King’s Royal by Crown Royal event was dominated early by Danny Lasoski who jumped out to the early lead from his front row starting position, but it was Joey Saldana who would keep Lasoski in his sights for the first 19 laps. On lap 20, Saldana maneuvered around Lasoski and checked out. He would go on to win the event and be crowned King Joey the 23rd.
“It feels pretty good,” Saldana said. “The best of the best were here. Everybody was here and this shows we are no slouches. You have to feel confident with these guys that you can win. If you don’t then you won’t get it done. I was confident coming in here. We didn’t get it done the first time we were here this year, but we didn’t get down. We came out strong and got the job done.”
Behind Saldana, Donny Schatz ran down Lasoski in the final laps to finish 2nd. “I’m here trying to win,” said Schatz. “We had a decent car, but it was not quite as good as theirs. They have put a lot into their engine program and it is obviously paying off. It will be nice to get on some track where we can slow down and race a little bit more. We’ll be going to some of those this week. We are in the summer heat, and the speeds will slow down, and we look to be better.”
Kevin Swindell must have been paying attention to Dale Blaney’s Friday night run as he started the A-main 23rd and passed more cars than anyone giving him a 4th place finish. Rounding out the Top 5 was Outlaw rookie contender and former four time All Star champ Chad Kemenah.
The All Stars will be back in action on August 2nd with the World of Outlaws at Butler Speedway in Quincy, MI. From there the series travels to Eldora Speedway with the Outlaws on August 4th. The July events at Southern Raceway in Milton, Florida have been cancelled.
