UNOH All Stars Kick off 'Northern' Tour during Traditional Attica Spring Nationals
ATTICA, OH (3-19-2013) By Brian Liskai - The stars of the University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) All Star Circuit of Champion Sprint Car Series will duke it out with the tough weekly competitors of Attica Raceway Park during the 22nd Annual HD Supply Spring Nationals on Friday and Saturday, March 29 and 30.

The event kicks off the UNOH All Star's "northern tour" and the Ohio Region of the series and has drawn some of the top stars in racing including three time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Tony Stewart and NASCAR star Kasey Kahne. Several Pennsylvania teams and World of Outlaw teams have shown up for the Spring Nationals as well.

"Attica Raceway Park is one of the most exciting tracks the All Stars compete at. With the level of competition that races there every week, and the loyal, intelligent fans that come there, coupled with is its history and proximity to other hot beds of racing....the Spring Nationals has become a 'must see' event in the Midwest region," said Guy Webb, President of the UNOH All Stars. "It's early enough in the season you just don't know who will show up. And from what we are hearing, the Ohio Region of the All Stars could be one of the most competitive and exciting in the history of the series."

After two UNOH All Star events have been completed in 2013 at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Florida, three time series champion and 2012 Ohio Region champion Dale "The Low Rider" Blaney of Hartford, Ohio, leads the UNOH All Star point standings. Blaney, who has 93 career All Star wins, just five away from tying hall-of-famer Kenny Jacobs for most wins in series history, opened the 2012 Spring Nationals with a last lap win and sits fifth on Attica's all-time with list with 16 victories. Blaney also have five victories in Spring Nationals competition.

Watertown, Connecticut's David Gravel, who has been filling in for the injured Bill Rose along the World of Outlaws trail as of late, recording solid top 10 runs, is currently second in the All Stars national points. Tim "The Steel City Outlaw Shaffer of Aliquippa, Pa., comes into the Spring Nationals third in the series points. Shaffer has won the last four straight All Star championships, a feat only accomplished by Jacobs and Chad Kemenah. Shaffer does have a 360 sprint win in 2013. Shaffer, who sits sixth on the All Stars' all-time win list with 51 victories, has 10 career wins at "Ohio's Finest Racing" speedplant. Pennsylvania's Lance Dewease, in a new ride for 2013, sits fourth the All Star points, and claimed the series' eastern region champion in 2011 and has one career win at Attica. Rounding out the series top five is four series and Attica rookie of the year Cap Henry from nearby Bellevue, Ohio. Henry had a break-out season with the All Stars in 2012, nearly claiming several wins, including a speedweek event at Attica.

Round out the All Stars' top 10 in points are Paul McMahan, Logan Schuchart, Danny Dietrich, Danny Holtgraver and Steve Buckwalter. Holtgraver scored his first UNOH All Star win at Attica to open the Ohio Speedweek in 2012, and went on to record 3 series wins in 2013.

And while the Attica Spring Nationals has drawn some of the biggest names in racing, it's the tough weekly competition that makes the event so exciting. In the 2012 spring nationals, Blaney opened with a last lap pass of Attica's 2012 champion Craig Mintz for the win. On the second night, Mintz, who has 8 career wins at Attica, executed a last lap pass of Stevie Smith, a 2005 Spring Nationals winner, for his first ever All Star win.

Then throw in six-time Attica champion Byron Reed, who has two Spring National wins, Greg Wilson, a two-time All Star champion and three-time Spring Nationals winner with 19 career victories at Attica, 2011 and 2012 FAST (Fremont Attica Sprint Title) Bryan Sebetto who has 7 career wins at Attica, former track champion Dean Jacobs and a host of other tough weekly and regional competitors and you have a recipe for excitement.

Schatz Sweeps UNOH All Stars at Bubba Raceway Park
OCALA, FLA. (Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013) By Brian Liskai– On many nights in racing, it’s all about taking advantage of opportunities when they present themselves. For the second night in a row Donny Schatz did just that as he took the win against the University of Northwest Ohio All Star Circuit of Champions Saturday at Bubba Raceway Park.

When Steve Kinser suffered a flat tire with 10 laps to go Saturday, it caused race leader Dale Blaney, who was locked in a battle with four time UNOH All Star champion Tim Shaffer, to slow ever so slightly and Schatz was there to pounce. Schatz, a five time and defending World of Outlaws champion, drove into the lead in his Tony Stewart Racing/STP/Armor All backed machine. Shaffer regrouped and was able to apply pressure to Schatz as they raced into lapped traffic late in the race. However, Shaffer couldn’t make the pass as Schatz drove to his 11th career UNOH All Star victory.

“What a great weekend. The guys got all the cars and motors running fantastic and it’s a lot of fun. This is what’s fun about racing. I was able to maneuver around and take advantage when Dale and Tim got to racing and they left a spot open for me,” said Schatz. “These new Hoosier tires aren’t like the tires we ran eight years ago, but they have a little forgiveness to them. I can do things in the race car that I haven’t been able to do in while. I can maneuver the car again…it’s exciting to see.”

After being involved in tangle on the opening night, a second place finish was just what Shaffer and his Aaron Call/Janet Holbrook Motorsports team needed.

“This is a tough place to pass. We had a couple of shots at Donny, but he got the breaks and things went his way. After the first night, this is a shot in the arm for us,” said Shaffer, who has won the last four consecutive UNOH All Star championships.

“We know we can compete with these guys. I’m excited to get to Volusia. It won’t be easy there. It’s like Knoxville…everyone has their best stuff and the competition is the best,” added Shaffer beside his Kistler Engines/Kistler Racing Products/VRP Shocks backed #83.

Blaney and Shaffer would bring the field to the green, with Blaney grabbing the lead with Shaffer remaining within striking distance. Meanwhile Schatz and three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart were battling for third with two-time All Star champion Greg Wilson in fifth. As they raced into traffic, Shaffer was able to grab the lead on lap 8, but it was short-lived as Blaney used the same traffic to regain the lead a lap later.

Just past the half-way point, Kinser, who had worked his way from 24th to 13th, had a right rear tire going down. With 10 laps to go as Kinser tried to exit the track, it hindered Blaney and Shaffer, allowing Schatz to drive into the lead with Shaffer in second and Blaney falling back to third. A lap later and Stewart, aboard his Chevy Performance/Mobil 1 #14, would take third from Blaney with Wilson continuing to round out the top five. Shaffer would get to Schatz with less than a handful of laps left, but couldn’t make the pass.

Schatz would drive to the victory over Shaffer, Stewart and Blaney while Daryn Pittman would slip past Wilson with four laps to go to round out the top five finishers.

Schatz Opens UNOH All Star Season with Win at Bubba Raceway Park
OCALA, FLA. (Friday, Feb. 8, 2013) By Brian Liskai – In a pre-season media poll, Donny Schatz was tabbed as the favorite to win the 2013 World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series championship. The Fargo, North Dakota driver did nothing to disprove that notion Friday, opening the University of Northwest Ohio All Star Circuit of Champions’ season with a win at Bubba Raceway Park.

Schatz, a five time World of Outlaws champion, passed 2012 UNOH All Star Eastern Region champion Daryn Pittman on the 11th lap and then held off Pittman in traffic to claim his 10th career UNOH All Star victory.

“There’s just nothing like winning. I think the media picking me to win the World of Outlaws title this year takes some of the pressure off. To know the media recognizes how good of a team we have helps us,” said Schatz beside his Tony Stewart Racing/STP/Armor All backed #15. “Bubba has worked very hard on this track trying to make it two grooves and it paid off tonight. The track was as good as I’ve ever seen Ocala.”

Three time UNOH All Star champion Dale Blaney and Pittman would bring the field to the green with Pittman grabbing the lead aboard his new Kasey Kahne Racing ride. Schatz, who drove around Blaney on the second lap to take the runner-up spot, would slip past Pittman for the lead on the 11th lap.

Things really got interesting after Schatz took the lead, as Kerry Madsen put his machine on its side, bringing out the red. On the restart, Schatz would pull away slightly from Pittman as Hanover, Pennsylvania’s Logan Schuchart slid around Blaney for third with Bellevue, Ohio’s Cap Henry getting around David Gravel for fifth.

Schatz’ lead would evaporate in lapped traffic as Pittman closed to within three car lengths. The battle for the fifth spot would heat back up with five laps to go, with Henry, Gravel and Cody Darrah battled.

Schatz would hold off Pittman at the checkers with Schuchart taking third with Blaney and Gravel rounding out the top five.

“There were some lapped cars that give us some problems. I just had to pull out all the stops and puss the issue a little with some of them. Once I did that we were good,” said Schatz.

For Pittman, his debut in the Great Clips/Sage Fruit machine couldn’t have gone much better.

“I’m very pleased with how we ran tonight. It was a bit disappointing to watch Donny go by, but in the same token he didn’t pull away. I was able to hang with him and I think the last five laps I was quicker than he was and I had a shot at him in traffic. I think it helped me to be behind him. I was able to see where I was losing ground to him and where I needed to change my line. I learned a lot following him,” said Pittman.

For Schuchart, it was another good start to a racing season.

“Last year we started strong at Screven but struggled at Ocala. But tonight….I don’t know if it’s the new Hoosier tires or we found something with the car, but I felt good in the car. I could run with the fast guys and that felt really good,” said Schuchart beside his Rich Fogle Custom Pole Buildings/Your Auto Source Inc. /Newman’s Shell backed #1s.

“It was hard to pass tonight. When Blaney and Madsen got together, I was right there with them so on the restart I knew I could race with them. I was able to get to third and I knew I was fast up top. I can’t wait to race tomorrow,” added Schuchart.

UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions bring excitement to 10 states in 2013

ImageCAMARGO, IL (2-7-13) By Brian Liskai –  The University of Northwestern Ohio All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars will live up to their moniker “America’s Series” in 2013. The touring series will entertain fans in 10 states over at least 45 events this season, which kicks off this week with the traditional “southern swing” in Georgia and Florida.

“Our regional concept has created a lot of excitement all over the Midwest. More drivers are participating in All Star events and that has brought a level of competition to tracks that has attracted more fans. This season will continue our mantra ‘you never know who will win’ when the UNOH All Stars come to town,” said Guy Webb, UNOH All Star CEO.

In 2012, the UNOH All Stars sanctioned 43 races with 22 different winners. Aliquippa, Pennsylvania’s Tim Shaffer scored his fourth consecutive national UNOH All Star championship and picked up six wins along the way. Three-time series champion Dale Blaney took the Ohio Region title for the series, winning a series’ best nine times to run his career total to 93, just five behind hall-of-famer Kenny Jacobs for the most All Star wins. Daryn Pittman scored the UNOH All Stars Eastern Region championship with three series wins in 2012.

The UNOH All Stars have 45 races on the 2013 schedule. Highlights include five visits to Attica Raceway Park to help celebrate the track’s 25th anniversary; six stops at Fremont Speedway as “The Track That Action Built” celebrates its 63rd season of racing; taking on the PA Posse at the historic Williams Grove Speedway, Port Royal Speedway and Lincoln Speedway; the 31st Annual Ohio Sprint Speedway week which currently features eight nights of racing over nine days; and two stops at Tony Stewart’s Eldora Speedway. There’s also the annual swing into New York and the Thunder Through the Plains.

Besides Shaffer and Blaney, the UNOH All Stars will continue to show case the young up-and-coming stars like Danny Holtgraver, Cap Henry, David Gravel, Justin Henderson and Caleb Helms.

“When you throw in the local talent in the regions, our events will continue to bring excitement to race fans all over the Midwest,” added Webb.
